What do mum’s and soldiers have in common?

adhd anxiety autism neurodivergence stress May 22, 2025

Emotional health is the gateway to all health—and nowhere is this more evident than in families navigating neurodiversity. The chronic stress experienced by parents, particularly mothers of autistic or ADHD children, is not just emotional—it is deeply biological. Research by Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn, Nobel Prize-winning author of The Telomere Effect, found that mothers of autistic children under chronic stress had significantly shortened telomeres, a marker of accelerated cellular aging and increased disease risk. Similarly, Psychology Today reports on research by Seltzer et al. (2010) showing that some mothers of autistic children exhibit physiological stress profiles comparable to combat soldiers. And the burden doesn't stop with autism. A 2023 study by Olczyk et al. in Pub Med found that “child anxiety and emotion dysregulation in children with ADHD have a negative impact on parental stress,” highlighting that poor emotional coping in children leads to elevated stress, role restriction, and isolation for parents.

As neurodivergent diagnoses rise this is the hidden health crisis: families locked in a cycle of emotional overload and physiological wear. This is where we step in. By placing emotional health at the centre of prevention, we offer what others overlook—a family-centred, science-backed model that addresses the root of stress. Neurodiversity is our entry point, not as a problem to fix but as a lens that exposes a wider systemic gap. We help parents understand the biological cost of emotional strain and support families with practical, body-based tools that restore connection and improved health outcomes. We have created a different standard of care—one that finally sees and supports the whole person, and the whole family.
