Where did she go?

Think about who you were before you became a mum. Confident. Clear. Fun. The one who led.

Now think about who shows up when your child is at their hardest. You tiptoe. You check their face before you speak. You say the right words while your stomach's in knots. You're calm, calm, calm, and then you snap.

Behaviour doesn't exist in isolation. It's shaped in relationship. When you change who shows up, your child changes too. In five days, you'll find the confident version of you again. We call her your new identity.

That isn't who you are.

It's who you've practised being.

“Before this I tried to be emotionally agile with my daughter, but the rest of the time I was drowning in a whirlpool. I was losing patience with her because I was afraid of the mask slipping. Now I'm going to live my new identity in the small moments on my own, so there's less of a jump when I'm with my daughter.”

Who you'll be by Friday

You lead instead of react.

When your child kicks off, you don't freeze, fix or snap. You do what your new identity would do.

You stop knowing and start doing.

You've read the books. This week you practise it in real moments with your child.

You find her again.

You meet your new identity, and you learn how to reach her when you need her.

Your child changes too.

The mum they're reacting to is different, so they respond differently.

You're not fixed. You're the output of what you practise, and the only time you can change is now.

“I had no trust in myself when I started (victim 101). Now my favourite thing to say is ‘I will always be ok, as I have me in my team.’ Huge turnaround.”

“I noticed it in the car this morning, on my own. I was away in my head. I remembered my scene, noticed the old tape, sat up, put a high-octane tune on and jumped into my new identity.”

Emma and Laura, founders of The Emotions Lab

I'm Laura. My daughter entered burnout at 12.

School refusal. Panic attacks. And me tiptoeing around her, terrified I was going to make it worse. I wasn't new to this. I'd trained as an ADHD coach, studied psychotherapy, read everything. Nothing worked, because all of it focused on changing her.

So I changed me. I put a picture inside my cupboard of a girl with a school backpack, looking back over her shoulder as she walked forward with her friends. Then I kept asking one question: ‘What would the future version of me do right now?’ And I did it, again and again. I developed an incredible relationship with my daughter, with her doing absolutely nothing at all.

My sister Emma and I run The Emotions Lab together. We're certified health coaches and Associate Members of the Royal Society of Medicine, trained in neuroscience, EFT, IFS, somatic regulation and lifestyle medicine. But everything we teach is grounded in something no qualification gives you: living this inside our own families.

When we changed, everything changed.
