Priority - conversations that connect not control
Apr 23, 2025
Let’s stop fixing—and start listening.
One of the most transformative modules in our courses for parents and teachers is all about coaching conversations. When we both trained in coaching, we were blown away by how just a few simple techniques could completely shift the way we communicate—not just with clients, but with our own children.
So often, we fall into the trap of feeling like we need to fix everything. To jump in with advice, offer solutions, and take control of the problem. It comes from a place of love, of course—but it can leave us exhausted and our children disempowered.
The idea that we don’t have to fix everything felt like a massive relief. No more pressure to have all the answers. But then came the question: What do I say instead? Isn’t it my job as a parent to solve problems?
The truth is, our children do need our support, guidance, and advice—but not always. In fact, nine times out of ten, they just want us to listen. They want to feel heard. They want to feel understood. And with the right kind of conversation—one rooted in curiosity and compassion—they can often work things out for themselves.
That’s where coaching conversations come in.
Coaching conversations aren’t about talking at our children, they’re about creating space for reflection. They’re about asking questions that open up possibility, and about resisting the urge to jump in with solutions. We were expertly taught how to tame our “advice monkeys”—that strong instinct to swoop in with the answer. Because while our intention may be good, constant advice-giving can actually disempower the very people we want to help.
Instead, coaching helps build emotional resilience, self-awareness, and confidence. And the best part? These conversations don’t need to be long or complicated. A small shift in how we respond can make a big difference.
