Being on the front line of anxiety - an interview with teachers

Jan 04, 2024

Happy New Year!

We spent time over the holidays talking to experienced teachers who have been in the profession for over a couple of decades. They all note that there has been a positive shift in how teachers perceive behavioural issues, recognising them as symptoms of underlying struggles such as neurodivergence, adverse childhood experiences, and challenges in home life. Schools are progressively moving away from harsh discipline, focusing on understanding the root causes of behavioral problems and anxiety.

However, the aftermath of COVID-19 has introduced new challenges. Conversations with teachers reveal a widespread belief that the rise in issues is linked to missed key milestones during primary school years – critical transitions and developmental phases that impact socialization and behavioral learning. The academic setback resulting from these disruptions puts immense pressure on the education system, exacerbating stress over exams and highlighting a lack of resources to support struggling children.

Teaching has evolved into a multifaceted profession, requiring educators to navigate not only curriculum delivery but also act as social workers, managing paperwork, referrals, pastoral notes, and emotional exhaustion. The demands on teachers have intensified, leaving little room for emotional decompression. Despite their dedication, teachers face tough cases daily, dealing with vulnerable children without superhuman abilities or comprehensive training in the issues they encounter.

In light of these challenges, there is a pressing need for support systems and tools to help teachers cope. Many long-time educators express concerns about the emotional toll, with some contemplating leaving the profession. The importance of care packages for teachers becomes evident – providing resources for emotional decompression, guidance on setting emotional boundaries, and fostering the emotional resilience required in today's primary school environment. As education evolves, prioritising the well-being of those shaping young minds is crucial.
