A letter to my neurodivergent child.

Dec 14, 2023

To my neurodivergent child,

The world might often feel like it's working against you, but your unique way of experiencing the world is not a flaw. You are not "difficult" or "naughty, " you merely learn, think, and engage with life differently. The fact is your brain was essential years ago when we valued the hunter, the warrior and the explorer.

In a society that tends to value conventional learning styles, your distinct abilities are frequently judged and overlooked. You might learn best by doing, thinking outside the box, or being incredibly creative, to the point where your own thoughts become distractions. Large classrooms and background noise can be overwhelming. Social interactions might be challenging or emotionally draining because you feel so deeply.

The education system can be unforgiving, leading to a lifetime of labels that can damage your self-esteem and sense of self-worth. Yet, in a world that is rapidly changing and faces complex issues like climate change, destruction by AI, pandemics and societal breakdown it will be your beautifully creative mind that holds the key to solutions.

It's not those who can recite historical facts who step forward as our innovators and leaders; it's often those who dare to think differently. You bring fresh perspectives, creativity, and a willingness to take risks because you've learned that failure is just another step on the path to success.

In a world that often values conformity, your different perspective is so valuable, please do not lose your courage to voice it. Your amazing brain offers a catalyst for progress we can all learn from you how to do things differently.

Your journey may be filled with challenges, you will forever swim upstream in a downstream world. You are resilient and brave because you have always had to be. Your diverse brain will take you far, so long as you hold tight to its powers, be forever proud to be different when you are surrounded by so much ordinary.
