The free guide for mums who want to move from reactive to responsive. What emotional regulation really is, in one read, five minutes.

What Is Emotional Regulation?Ā

Why holding it together isn't the same as being regulated, and why it starts with you

3 Roles in Me That Were Keeping My Anxious Daughter StuckĀ

Because most of us were never taught how to handle big emotions. We learned patterns, not skills, and our kids are learning them from us.

What's inside

Why your regulation shapes your whole family. Children learn emotional regulation by watching you, not by being told. It's called co-regulation, and it means the patterns we grew up with get passed down unless someone changes them. When you change how you respond, you change what your kids learn: less escalation, faster repair, and a stronger connection.

What emotional regulation actually is, and what it isn't. It's not suppressing feelings or keeping a lid on everything. It's recognising what's happening in your body when emotions run high, and responding in a way that doesn't overwhelm you or the people around you.

Why the thinking brain goes offline under stress. When stress takes over, logic and reassurance can't get through, for you or your child. The guide explains why settling the body comes first, and how thinking strategies help stop the next escalation.

The foundations that make it easier, or harder. Sleep, food, movement, connection and breathing all shape your stress chemistry. Get these right and every other skill works better, for you and your kids.

Emma and Laura, founders of The Emotions Lab

I'm Laura. My daughter entered burnout at 12.

School refusal. Panic attacks. And me tiptoeing around her, terrified I was going to make it worse. I wasn't new to this. I'd trained as an ADHD coach, studied psychotherapy, read everything. Nothing worked, because all of it focused on changing her. This guide is the starting point I wish someone had handed me back then: what was actually happening in my body and brain under stress, why my words couldn't reach her in those moments, and why the change had to start with me.

My sister Emma and I run The Emotions Lab together. We're certified health coaches and Associate Members of the Royal Society of Medicine, trained in EFT, IFS, somatic regulation and lifestyle medicine. But everything we teach is grounded in something no qualification gives you: living this inside our own families.

When we changed, everything changed.
